Phalaborwa is more than a gateway to Kruger — it is a relaxed corner of Limpopo with river cruises, craft spirits and one of Africa’s most unusual golf courses, all within easy reach. Here is a gentle three-day plan, built around a self-catering base so you can go at your own pace.
Day 1 — Into Kruger
Start with the main event. Be at the Kruger Phalaborwa Gate as it opens (it is five minutes away) and spend the morning on a self-drive safari. Come back to the cottage for lunch and a slow afternoon, then head out again for the golden hour if the bush is calling.
Day 2 — Water and a little indulgence
Give the legs a rest and take to the water. An Olifants River boat safari is a completely different way to see wildlife — hippo, crocodile and waterbirds at eye level. If you would rather go further afield, the Blyde River Canyon cruise takes you beneath the third-largest green canyon on earth. Day 3 — Golf in the wild (or one more safari)
For something you will not find anywhere else, play a round at the Ba-Phalaborwa Golf Club (the former Hans Merensky course), where impala, warthog and the occasional elephant share the fairways. Not a golfer? Slip back into Kruger for a final morning drive, or simply linger in the garden before you go.
