One thing we have learned from years of welcoming guests: almost everyone underestimates how far Phalaborwa is from Johannesburg. If you are planning your stay at our Phalaborwa self-catering accommodation, it pays to know the distances up front, choose the right road, and set off with plenty of daylight. Here is exactly how to get to Phalaborwa — and why the journey is part of the pleasure.
Driving from Johannesburg
Most of our guests arrive by road. From O.R. Tambo International it is roughly 487 km and six to seven hours’ drive, depending on stops. It is a very doable day on the road, but it is not a quick hop — give yourself the full day, leave in the morning, and plan to arrive before dark. Limpopo’s roads are quiet and beautiful, but they are best enjoyed in daylight.
The route we recommend: via Polokwane & Magoebaskloof
Our preferred route runs north on the N1 to Polokwane, then east on the R71 through the Magoebaskloof mountains and the citrus town of Tzaneen before dropping down to Phalaborwa. The tar is generally in good condition, there are plenty of places to refuel and grab a coffee in Polokwane, and the Magoebaskloof pass is genuinely one of the prettiest stretches of road in the country — misty forests, waterfalls and mountain views that make the last couple of hours fly by. For a relaxed, scenic drive, this is the one we point people to.
This route is a pleasure in both directions, so here are our favourite places to break the journey — coming or going:
- Sasol Zebediela NorthA decent stop to refuel and stretch your legs.
- Maxi’s at The RanchA nice spot for a proper sit-down meal.
- The Pancake HouseA Haenertsburg favourite for sweet and savoury pancakes.
- Petrol, HaenertsburgTop up before the mountain passes.
- Pot ’n PlowA charming Magoebaskloof restaurant.
- Blueberry Heights Farm CaféA lovely farm café with a view.
- Magoebaskloof Farmstall & CafeLocal produce, treats and good coffee.
- Krabbefontein Coffee ShopOne of our partners — their home café in the hills, and a must-stop for excellent coffee.
- Allesbeste PadstalYou will find Krabbefontein coffee here, along with fresh fruit and veg — a great place to stock up before you arrive.
- Mugg & Bean On The Move (Total Tzaneen)A reliable coffee-and-fuel stop as you near the final stretch.

Heading home afterwards? These same stops make the drive back to O.R. Tambo just as enjoyable.
The alternative: the Mpumalanga road (Dullstroom way)
The other option swings east through Mpumalanga — past Dullstroom, over the escarpment and down the dramatic Abel Erasmus Pass toward Hoedspruit. We will be honest with you: it is a stunning drive, arguably even more spectacular than the Magoebaskloof route. But sections of this road have been plagued by bad potholes, so if you take it, drive carefully, keep your speed down, and travel in daylight only. It rewards a slow, unhurried pace — not a rush to arrive.
Here are our favourite stops along this route — tap any to open it in Google Maps and save it before you set off:
- Alzu PetroportFuel, food and a chance to see rhino right beside the highway. Tempting — but our tip is to hold out and make Dullstroom your proper stop.
- MBT Petroleum DullstroomFuel up here.
- Dullstroom Brewery / Windpomp BistroGreat coffee and sandwiches.
- Harrie’s PancakesA Dullstroom institution — extra busy on weekends, lovely and quiet midweek.
- Mayfly Restaurant & Cocktail LoungeA great spot for a proper sit-down meal.
- The Deli StroomGrab some treats for the road and your stay.
- Platō CoffeeA good coffee stop.
- Sasol LydenburgFuel up.
- Astron Energy OhrigstadFuel — and there’s a great butcher here too.
- Le-Cofi Coffee ShopCoffee stop.
- Curio stallsPick up a souvenir as you wind down the pass.
- Mad Dogz CafeA good bite as you reach the lowveld. See our full guide to Hoedspruit.

On the final stretch to Phalaborwa, a section of road was washed away in the January 2026 floods, and the signage here is confusing — many travellers turn left toward Gravelotte and loop the long way around. You don’t need to. You can drive straight through in your own vehicle: at this point, simply continue straight on, past the signs. See the spot on the map →
Current at the time of writing — we’ll update this once the road is repaired.
Flying in — via Hoedspruit
Prefer to fly? The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Hoedspruit (Eastgate / HDS), about an hour south of us. Direct flights link Hoedspruit with Johannesburg, Cape Town and George:
- From Johannesburg (JNB): Airlink and CemAir
- From Cape Town (CPT): FlySafair and Airlink
- From George (GRJ): CemAir
Car hire is available right at the airport, so you can collect a vehicle on arrival. Operators at Hoedspruit Eastgate include Avis, Europcar, First Car Rental, Bidvest, Hertz and Budget. From Hoedspruit it is a straightforward one-hour drive north to Phalaborwa and Thula Moya.
Many visitors to this corner of Kruger base themselves near Hoedspruit — if that is you, here is why the Phalaborwa Gate is worth the short drive.
You will need your own vehicle
This is the single most important thing to plan for: you need your own private vehicle to get around Limpopo. There is no reliable public transport or ride-hailing out here, attractions are spread out, and self-drive is how you reach Kruger’s Phalaborwa Gate (five minutes away), the golf course, Hoedspruit and everything in between. Whether you drive up from Johannesburg or hire a car at Hoedspruit airport, make sure you have a set of wheels for your whole stay.
A few practical tips
- Fuel up in the bigger towns — Polokwane or Tzaneen on the recommended route — rather than leaving it to the last stretch.
- Drive in daylight. Rural roads can have livestock, pedestrians and the odd pothole after dark.
- Pack snacks and water for the road; stops are plentiful but spaced out.
- Check your route before you lose signal and download offline maps as a backup.
Once you have booked, we will send you precise door-to-door directions to the cottage. If you have any questions about the drive or the best route for your travel dates, just get in touch — we are always happy to help you plan the journey to your Phalaborwa accommodation.
